The science floor

Faith is not a data strategy

Masrif's design rules are derived from published scandals, central-bank reports and the Islamic-fintech literature itself — the evidence for why an Islamic platform must be built like a vault and regulated like a bank, before it is designed like anything at all.

What the record actually says

Two warnings from the industry's worst days, two facts about Malaysian money, one governance finding and one piece of settled learning science.

2020

Prayer data became a targeting asset

Location feeds from Muslim Pro — an app used for worship, five times a day — were brokered through data firm X-Mode to US defense and intelligence contractors. Users were never told; the app's policy didn't mention it. The ACLU called the harvesting “a serious threat to privacy and religious freedom.” Worship telemetry is not engagement data. Treated as data, it is a census of a faith.

Scams are now the cost line of convenience

Malaysians reported RM2.8 billion lost to scams in 2025 — and the accountability regime moved with it: e-wallet providers that fail to implement BNM's anti-scam measures are now expected to compensate victims within seven working days. In this environment a wallet that only optimises for frictionless taps is optimising for the thief.

Zakat is a federation, not an API

Thirteen states plus the Federal Territories each run their own zakat authority, rates, nisab conventions and rebate rules — and the academic literature is blunt that many Muslims consequently don't calculate zakat correctly. A calculator that ignores which state you're in isn't simplifying the system; it's inventing a ruling with a number attached.

81%

The rails are already national

E-wallet usage in Malaysia reached roughly 81%, riding DuitNow QR across merchants, under a central-bank regime that mandates fund safeguarding and licensed issuance. The lesson for a “Muslim super-app”: the hard infrastructure problem is solved — the trust problem is not, and walled-garden wallets solve it in the wrong direction.

Shariah governance is the binding constraint

Reviews find Islamic banks and fintechs adopt technology slower than conventional peers, and trace the gap to shariah governance: every feature must survive scholar oversight to remain halal. The literature treats governance as a cost. Masrif treats it as the design — scholar-in-the-loop is architecture here, the way teacher-in-the-loop is in AnTeraju.

Memorization science is settled

Spaced retrieval is the best-evidenced learning technique there is, with honest classroom effects in tenths of a standard deviation. It is also, coincidentally, the oldest Islamic learning technology — sabaq, juz revision, fourteen centuries of a ummah memorizing a book. The hafiz engine stands on both traditions and pretends to be on neither.

So Masrif is built this way

from: X-Mode 2020

Worship never leaves the device

Prayer times, quran pages read, fasts logged: computed and stored on the phone, with export only to the user. No ad SDKs in the build, no analytics on deen events, no data partnerships — enforced at dependency level, not policy level. The 2020 scandal is why this is a schema rule, not a promise.

from: shariah-governance gap

No fatwa from a model

The assistant answers only from the scholar-certified corpus, cites source and school, and hands off everything else to a human. Rulings are traceable to an adult who is accountable for them — the same refusal AnTeraju makes about essays.

from: 14 authorities

State-aware zakat or no zakat

The engine computes against the official authority of your state, shows its inputs, and files the receipt for tax relief. Where authorities differ, Masrif shows the difference instead of smoothing it — an estimate labelled as one, never a ruling dressed as math.

from: RM2.8b 2025

Safety is a feature with a price tag

Handle verification, recipient friction, pattern detection — judged the way BNM now judges wallets: by ringgit not lost. A wallet that makes scams easy is not a convenient wallet; it is an accomplice with nice typography.

from: 81% on DuitNow

National rails, licensed custody

DuitNow interoperability and BNM's safeguarding regime, inherited from the Atlas platform's banking-grade lineage. No closed merchant network, no proprietary QR, no float games — the boring architecture is what keeps the money halal-flowing and auditable.

from: the whole floor

Two ledgers, no join key

The deen ledger and the dana ledger share your identity and share nothing else — no query can cross them, so no model, audit or subpoena can produce “the person who prays Fajr and buys that.” Privacy as ihsan: the firewall is an act of adab toward the user's soul.

Why here, why now

The Malaysian numbers

0
deen events sold, ever

The business model that made Muslim Pro a surveillance story is refused outright: Masrif monetizes services — payments float, zakat settlement, learning — never worship.

RM2,737
average annual zakat, research-measured

Malaysian zakat studies put the average payment in the thousands of ringgit — real money, routinely mis-calculated. The autopilot exists because the obligation is serious, not decorative.

7 days
to compensate scam victims

The government's new accountability standard for negligent wallets. Masrif designs to never need the apology: prevention first, restitution fast when prevention genuinely failed.

81%
already live in e-wallets

Malaysians don't need convincing to adopt a wallet; they need a reason to trust one with their deen attached. That combination — national habit, religious seriousness — is the actual market gap.

A Friday, honestly described

Adhan computed on the phone at 13:12 — no server knew it was coming. After Jumaat, the mosque committee's copilot reconciles today's collection to the ringgit, in statements any jemaah can audit. At the mamak, the wallet checks a DuitNow handle against a flagged pattern before RM40 leaves — it doesn't. The nisab clock ticks in the background, state rules attached, receipts ready for the LHDN line. Nothing was gamified, nothing was tracked, nothing was sold. The deen stayed between the person and their Creator; the dana stayed clean enough to prove it.
